When setting a meal plan, an individual must ensure that the diet foods consumed still represent a balanced and complete diet. It is recommended that about a third of a person’s weight is the amount of protein grams that individual should consume daily, even when on a diet, in order to maintain energy and reduce the loss of lean body mass. Fruits and vegetables can be ideal diet foods, and it is recommended that five servings of fruit and vegetables should be consumed daily. Several smaller meals consumed throughout the day can also assist in diet meal planning, and can include healthy choices such as whole grain cereals, low fat dairy products, and low fat meats, fish, and poultry. During a diet meal plan, sugary juices and sodas should be replaced with increased water intake.
The simplest way to begin a diet meal plan is to start by counting calories, and avoiding foods that are high in fat and sugar content. There are 3500 calories in one pound of fat. To lose one pound of fat per week, 500 calories a day must be subtracted from a current caloric intake. This can also be accomplished by subtracting 250 calories a day and then expelling 250 calories through activity or exercise, like walking 2.5 miles. Setting a daily caloric limit can be done by speaking with a doctor or health nutritionist. There are also entire programs and institutions dedicated to assisting in diet food menu plans -- even some that deliver the food prepackaged to an individual. Once this daily caloric intake is designated, meals can be adjusted to follow the calorie requirements. Sometimes, meals can borrow from one another in order to allow enjoyment of a treat or special occasion. Two hundred calories can be removed from a lunch meal in order to enjoy a dinner out at a restaurant or a shared dessert. Any diet meal plan should maintain healthy dietary standards and also include an exercise regiment to increase weight loss.
